An ethics program has to begin with a goal or vision, which should be articulated as an ethics statement. Different organizations naturally emphasize different values, and understanding the nuances is crucial to crafting a useful statement.

Another reason is emphasized by the consultant David Gebler of Working Values. Gebler points out that if there is an actual or perceived conflict between the company's business goals and its ethical values, one of them is likely to be marginalized - in all probability, the ethics.
