"I think Harry Stonecipher [former Boeing CEO] is in a spotlight now that reflects a demand for personal integrity that we've never seen before for corporate leaders," said David Gebler, an ethics consultant to Fortune 500 companies. "And I think you can make the argument that it's not at the expense of shareholders, but for the good of shareholders."
Gebler, president of Working Values in Sharon, Mass., said little tolerance remains for executives carving out personal exceptions to company ethics rules.
"These days, conflicts of interest are such a significant issue, we need to have a heightened sensitivity to ethics because it reflects badly on the company" and can shake shareholder confidence, he said.
